Amorim Backs Under-Fire Onana After Europa League Errors.
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has offered a strong show of support for goalkeeper Andre Onana, following criticism and high-profile mistakes in the club’s Europa League quarter-final first-leg draw against Lyon.
The Cameroonian was at fault for both of Lyon’s goals in Thursday’s 2-2 result, prompting fresh scrutiny just a day after former United midfielder Nemanja Matic labelled him “one of the worst goalkeepers” in the club’s history.
Despite the criticism, Amorim stood firmly behind his player, admitting his own shortcomings and calling for perspective.
“If you look at the season, I’ve made more mistakes than them during these last games and months,” said the Portuguese coach, who took charge of United in November.
Onana has made eight errors leading to goals in all competitions since the start of last season — the most by any goalkeeper at a Premier League club. However, Amorim insisted the shot-stopper still has his trust, saying: “There’s nothing I can say to Andre in this moment that will help him. The most important thing is to be natural, and when the time comes, I will choose the best XI to play. But I’m really confident in Andre.”
Manchester United will host Lyon in the second leg at Old Trafford next Thursday, needing a win to progress. With the Red Devils sitting 13th in the Premier League, lifting the Europa League remains their most realistic route to Champions League qualification next season.
When asked by TNT Sports whether he still had faith in Onana, Amorim responded assuredly: “We continue to do the same thing. Training, seeing the games, trying to choose the best eleven to win every match.”
As United prepare for a crucial second leg, Amorim’s public backing of his players reflects a determination to foster unity and resilience within the squad during a testing season.
