Breaking News: Federal High Court In Abuja Dismisses MultiChoice Nigeria’s Suit Against FCCPC Over DStv, GOtv Price Hike

Federal High Court In Abuja Dismisses MultiChoice Nigeria’s Suit Against FCCPC Over DStv, GOtv Price Hike.

In a significant ruling, the Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed a lawsuit brought by MultiChoice Nigeria Limited challenging the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) regarding recent increases in subscription fees for DStv and GOtv services.

The judgement, delivered on Thursday by Justice James Omotoso, marks a victory for the FCCPC, which had contested the price hikes implemented by MultiChoice, a leading provider of satellite television services in Nigeria. The court’s decision upholds the regulatory body’s authority to scrutinise pricing practices in the interest of consumer protection.

The suit stemmed from MultiChoice’s decision to raise subscription fees for its DStv and GOtv packages, a move that sparked widespread criticism from consumers amid Nigeria’s challenging economic climate. The FCCPC argued that the fee increases were unjustified and lacked transparency, prompting MultiChoice to seek legal recourse to block regulatory intervention.

Justice Omotoso, in his ruling, dismissed MultiChoice’s claims, affirming the FCCPC’s mandate to safeguard consumers from unfair pricing practices. The decision is expected to have far-reaching implications for the pay-TV industry in Nigeria, potentially setting a precedent for greater oversight of subscription-based services.

A spokesperson for the FCCPC welcomed the ruling, stating, “This judgement reinforces our commitment to protecting Nigerian consumers and ensuring fair practices in the marketplace.” MultiChoice Nigeria has yet to issue a statement on the verdict or indicate whether it will appeal.

Consumer advocacy groups have hailed the court’s decision as a step towards greater accountability in the telecommunications and entertainment sectors. Many Nigerians, who rely on DStv and GOtv for news and entertainment, have expressed hope that the ruling will lead to more affordable pricing.

Further details on the case and its implications are expected to emerge in the coming days as stakeholders assess the impact of the judgement.
