Niger State Assembly Orders Probe Into Uncompleted Minna General Hospital Project

Niger State Assembly Orders Probe Into Uncompleted Minna General Hospital Project.

The Niger State House of Assembly has directed its Committee on Works and Infrastructure to investigate the stalled construction of the General Hospital Minna building project, aiming to address the facility’s worsening infrastructure crisis.

The decision followed a motion tabled by Hon. Pharm. Nasir Umar, the representative for Paikoro Constituency, during a plenary session chaired by Speaker Barr. Abdulmalik Mohammed Sarkin-Daji. The motion highlighted the urgent need to complete the project, which was initiated under the administration of former Governor Abubakar Sani Bello to ease pressure on the hospital’s overstretched facilities.

Hon. Umar informed the House that despite the relocation of some departments to temporary sites, the construction remains unfinished, exacerbating the hospital’s infrastructural decay. He expressed concern over the consequences for healthcare delivery, noting that the delays have forced patients to seek treatment at private clinics, where exorbitant fees are charged. “Medical doctors at the hospital have also been referring patients to their privately owned facilities,” Umar added, underscoring the strain on public healthcare.

The lawmaker stressed that without prompt completion and the provision of upgraded facilities, the General Hospital Minna would continue to deteriorate, leaving residents with limited access to affordable medical care.

The House unanimously adopted the motion, tasking the Committee on Works and Infrastructure with conducting a comprehensive investigation into the project’s status. The committee is expected to provide actionable recommendations to ensure the hospital’s completion, a move seen as critical to restoring quality healthcare services in the state capital.

The decision has been welcomed by residents, who hope the investigation will pave the way for a fully functional hospital equipped to meet the needs of the community. The Assembly’s proactive stance signals a commitment to tackling long-standing infrastructure challenges in Niger State’s healthcare sector.
