Barcelona Edge Real Madrid In Seven-Goal El Clásico Thriller To Close In On LaLiga Title.

Barcelona took a giant stride towards securing their 28th LaLiga title with a breathtaking 4-3 victory over rivals Real Madrid in a pulsating El Clásico at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys on 11 May 2025.

The match, a rollercoaster of emotions for both sets of fans, saw Hansi Flick’s side overcome an early two-goal deficit to claim a crucial win, extending their lead at the top of the table to seven points with just three matches remaining.

The game exploded into life early, with Kylian Mbappé putting Madrid ahead from a penalty in the 5th minute after being fouled by Barcelona goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny. The French star doubled Madrid’s lead nine minutes later, finishing a swift counter-attack assisted by Vinícius Júnior. At 2-0 down, Barcelona faced an uphill battle, but their response was electric. Eric García headed home from a corner in the 19th minute, sparking a frenetic spell that saw Lamine Yamal curl a sublime equaliser into the far post in the 32nd. Moments later, Raphinha capitalised on a loose pass to fire Barcelona into a 3-2 lead, and the Brazilian struck again just before half-time, pouncing on a costly error by Madrid captain Lucas Vázquez to make it 4-2.

The second half saw Barcelona create several chances, only to be thwarted by a string of stunning saves from Thibaut Courtois. Madrid clawed their way back when Mbappé completed his hat-trick in the 70th minute, again assisted by Vinícius, cutting the deficit to 4-3. Late drama ensued as Fermín López thought he had sealed it for Barcelona in stoppage time, but his goal was disallowed for handball. Despite the scare, Barcelona held firm to secure their fourth consecutive victory over Madrid this season, following wins in the Spanish Super Cup (5-2), Copa del Rey (3-2), and October’s LaLiga clash (4-0).

“It was obviously very important to win today,” said 17-year-old star Lamine Yamal, who earned widespread praise for his performance. “It’s great to have this game after the Champions League [semi-final loss to Inter Milan]. I think it’s already forgotten.” Barcelona’s resilience was hailed by midfielder Gavi, who told reporters, “The mentality this season has been unique,” reflecting on the team’s ability to fight back despite contentious refereeing decisions.

For Real Madrid, the defeat leaves their title hopes hanging by a thread. Carlo Ancelotti, whose future remains uncertain amid speculation that Xabi Alonso will replace him next season, admitted defensive lapses were decisive. “It was an evenly played match, competitive and fought until the last second,” he said post-match. “We could have scored the equaliser, but it is what it is. We attacked well, but in those 30 minutes, we made some quite obvious mistakes. We have to defend better, that is quite evident.”

Mbappé’s hat-trick, a rare feat in El Clásico, was a bittersweet highlight for Madrid. “Kylian scoring a hat-trick in El Clásico and still losing is quite something,” noted football writer Colin Millar, encapsulating Madrid’s frustrations. The result has led to introspection at the club, with reports suggesting the board views this season as “the end of a cycle,” hinting at significant changes ahead.

Barcelona now need just one more victory—or a Madrid slip-up—to clinch the title. A win in their city derby against Espanyol on Thursday could seal the championship, while Madrid face a must-win trip to Mallorca on Wednesday. “We’re simply devastating going forward,” said Flick, whose high-pressing style has rejuvenated Barcelona this season. With the Estadi Olímpic rocking, the Blaugrana faithful are already dreaming of lifting the trophy.

For Ancelotti, who has delivered 15 major trophies to Madrid, a trophyless campaign looms as an unfitting finale. Yet, ever the romantic, he insisted pre-match: “With this club, the honeymoon doesn’t end. The honeymoon with Madrid will last until the last day of my life.” As Barcelona edge closer to glory, Madrid’s faithful will hope their next chapter brings a return to dominance in this fiercest of rivalries.
