Lagos State Set To Transform Traffic With E-Call Up System On Lekki-Epe Corridor

Lagos State Set To Transform Traffic With E-Call Up System On Lekki-Epe Corridor.

Lagos State is gearing up for a major leap in traffic management as the government prepares to enforce the Electronic Call-Up (E-Call Up) system along the Lekki-Epe Corridor starting 16 June 2025. This innovative digital solution aims to ease chronic congestion, streamline logistics, and enhance road safety in one of Nigeria’s busiest economic zones, marking a significant milestone in urban planning.

Announced by Deputy Governor Dr Kadri Obafemi Hamzat during a stakeholders’ meeting on 29 May 2025, the E-Call Up system will regulate the movement of articulated trucks and tankers, which have long contributed to gridlock in the Lekki Free Trade Zone and surrounding areas. “This is not about revenue but about creating order and efficiency, much like we achieved in Apapa,” Dr Hamzat declared, referencing the system’s successful implementation in another key Lagos corridor.

The Lekki-Epe Corridor, a vital hub hosting the Lekki Deep Sea Port, Dangote Refinery, and other industrial giants, will see truck movements coordinated through five designated holding parks: Hog Marketing Limited (Okorisan, Epe), Nilmage Two4Seven (Poka, Epe), Goldspeed Freight Agency Ltd (opposite Dangote Refinery), Diamond Star Ports and Terminal Ltd (Abule Panu), and Tal Concept Ltd (HFP Brick Industry). To further reduce congestion, a ban on truck movements during peak hours (5 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.) will be strictly enforced by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Taskforce, and Police.

Commissioner for Transportation Oluwaseun Osiyemi highlighted the collaborative efforts behind the initiative, noting extensive consultations with stakeholders such as NUPENG, IPMAN, NARTO, and PTD. “We’ve worked tirelessly to ensure all parties are aligned. The immediate removal of obstructing vehicles is critical to the system’s success,” he stated. Initially launched on 23 September 2024 after a delay from 1 August, the system faced setbacks, leading to a suspension in March 2025. However, renewed cooperation has set the stage for its full enforcement.

This initiative aligns with Lagos State’s broader vision for modernised infrastructure, complementing projects like the €410 million Omi Eko water transport initiative, set to commence in June 2025, which will leverage inland waterways to further reduce road traffic. By integrating technology and stakeholder engagement, the E-Call Up system promises to enhance the flow of goods and people, boosting economic activity in the region.

The move also resonates with President Bola Tinubu’s nationwide infrastructure agenda, which includes significant investments in rail, road, and digital connectivity. As Lagos pioneers this tech-driven approach to traffic management, the E-Call Up system is poised to make the Lekki-Epe Corridor a model of efficiency, setting a precedent for urban centres across Nigeria.
