Just-In: Police Inspector Fatally Shot By 10-Year-Old Son In Tragic Anambra Accident.

The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the tragic death of Inspector Okolie Amechi, who was accidentally shot by his 10-year-old son in Awka, the state capital, on Sunday, 15 June 2025. The incident, described as a heart-wrenching accident, has left the local police force and community in mourning.

According to a statement by the command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the incident occurred around 9:40 p.m. at Polaris Bank, located along Zik Avenue in Awka, where Inspector Amechi was on duty. The officer’s three sons had visited him at his post when the tragedy unfolded. Unbeknownst to the eldest son, identified as Dominion Vincent, the officer’s service AK-47 rifle was cocked and left without its safety engaged. The 10-year-old inadvertently discharged the weapon, striking his father fatally in the spine and injuring his younger brother in the hand.

Both victims were immediately rushed to Amaku Specialist Teaching Hospital in Awka. Regrettably, Inspector Amechi was pronounced dead on arrival, while the injured child is responding to treatment and expected to recover. The AK-47 rifle has been recovered, and the officer’s body has been deposited at the hospital morgue. The case has been transferred to the Central Police Station in Awka for further investigation.

SP Ikenga expressed the command’s profound sorrow over the incident, stating, “The Anambra State Police Command is deeply saddened by the unfortunate event that resulted in the death of Inspector Okolie Amechi. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased.” The command also wished the injured child a speedy recovery.

The incident has sparked conversations about firearm safety, particularly in environments where children may have access to loaded weapons. While no formal statement has been issued regarding disciplinary measures, sources indicate that the police are reviewing protocols to prevent such tragedies in the future.

Inspector Amechi, a dedicated officer with the Nigeria Police Force (AP/No. 262498), was known for his commitment to duty and was highly regarded by his peers. His untimely death has cast a shadow over the Anambra State Police Command, with colleagues describing him as a diligent and kind-hearted individual.

The Anambra State Police Command has assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding the incident. They have urged the community to remain calm and refrain from speculating as the investigation progresses.

This tragic event serves as a sombre reminder of the dangers associated with firearms and the importance of stringent safety measures, especially in the presence of children.
