Nigeria’s Aviation Minister Secures Release Of Ibom Air Passenger And Lifts Lifetime Ban

Nigeria’s Aviation Minister Secures Release Of Ibom Air Passenger And Lifts Lifetime Ban.

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, has directed Ibom Air to withdraw its criminal complaint against passenger Comfort Emmanson, paving the way for her release from Kirikiri Prison. The announcement, made on Wednesday, 13 August 2025, follows a high-profile incident aboard an Ibom Air flight from Uyo to Lagos on 10 August, which led to Emmanson’s arrest and a lifetime flying ban imposed by the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON).

The altercation, captured in a viral video, showed Emmanson clashing with cabin crew and security personnel, allegedly assaulting a flight attendant. She was swiftly arraigned before the Ikeja Magistrates’ Court and remanded in prison after failing to provide adequate sureties. The incident sparked widespread public outcry, with the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) condemning Ibom Air’s handling of the situation as “heavy-handed” and unlawful, particularly citing the circulation of a video showing Emmanson’s clothing torn, exposing her upper body. Keyamo also ordered sanctions against airline staff responsible for leaking the footage.

Following consultations with aviation stakeholders and appeals from prominent figures, Keyamo confirmed that Emmanson expressed “great remorse” during police questioning in the presence of her lawyer. Consequently, Ibom Air agreed to drop the charges, and the Commissioner of Police for the Airport Command, alongside the Police Prosecutor, will facilitate her release within the week. The minister also successfully appealed to the AON to lift the lifetime flying ban, with further details to be announced by the association.

In a parallel case, Keyamo addressed the recent incident involving Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (KWAM 1), reducing his flight ban from one year to one month and withdrawing criminal complaints against him. The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) will engage KWAM 1 as an ambassador for airport security protocols. Additionally, the licences of ValueJet pilots Captain Oluranti Ogoyi and First Officer Ivan Oloba, suspended after the KWAM 1 incident, will be restored after a one-month ban and mandatory professional reassessment.

To prevent future incidents, Keyamo has mandated a retreat next week for aviation security personnel to receive training on de-escalating conflicts with passengers. A separate session will focus on improving airline staff conduct towards travellers. The minister stressed that these decisions were made on compassionate grounds but warned that the government remains steadfast in upholding aviation safety and security. “We will not pander to base sentiments or warped legal opinions when our laws are breached,” he stated, adding that these clemencies mark a firm line for future enforcement.

The resolutions have been hailed as a balanced approach, addressing public concerns while reinforcing the importance of proper conduct in Nigeria’s aviation sector. Emmanson’s release and the lifting of her ban signal a commitment to fairness, while the planned retraining aims to foster a safer and more professional aviation environment for all.
