Dangote Refinery Begins Nationwide Fuel Distribution With Free Shipping

Dangote Refinery Begins Nationwide Fuel Distribution With Free Shipping.

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has commenced a groundbreaking initiative to distribute petrol and diesel directly to retailers across Nigeria, effective today, with the added benefit of free shipping. This move is set to transform the country’s fuel supply chain, aiming to stabilise pump prices and ease distribution bottlenecks for retailers and consumers alike.

The refinery, Africa’s largest single-train facility located in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos, has introduced this programme to ensure a steady and affordable fuel supply nationwide. By absorbing transportation costs, Dangote Refinery seeks to reduce financial pressures on retailers, which could lead to lower prices at the pump for Nigerian consumers. Industry experts have hailed the initiative as a potential game-changer, noting its capacity to disrupt traditional supply chains and curb issues such as hoarding and price manipulation.

To support this ambitious rollout, the refinery has deployed a fleet of 4,000 brand-new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered tankers, designed to enhance efficiency and promote sustainability. Additionally, over 100 dedicated gas-powered trucks and daughter booster CNG stations will bolster last-mile delivery, ensuring fuel reaches even remote areas. This logistics framework aligns with the refinery’s commitment to reducing operational costs and improving energy access across Nigeria.

The programme targets a wide range of stakeholders, including fuel marketers, petrol station operators, manufacturers, telecommunications firms, and aviation companies. A credit scheme has also been introduced for bulk buyers purchasing 500,000 litres or more, allowing them to access an additional 500,000 litres on credit for two weeks, backed by a bank guarantee. This initiative is expected to revitalise dormant petrol stations, stimulate small and medium-sized enterprises, and support the economic reforms championed by President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Aliko Dangote, President of the Dangote Group, described the initiative as a “significant milestone” in reshaping Nigeria’s downstream petroleum sector. Speaking recently, he hinted at a broader “shakedown” of the industry, focusing not only on pricing but also on structural transformation to enhance efficiency and accessibility. The refinery’s efforts are further supported by the Federal Government’s Naira-for-Crude policy, which has helped stabilise fuel supply amidst global price volatility.

The announcement comes amid challenges, including protests from tanker drivers in Lagos over high E-Call Up charges along the Lekki-Epe Corridor. However, Dangote’s robust logistics strategy aims to mitigate such disruptions, ensuring a seamless supply chain. With the refinery scaling up to 500,000 barrels per day and aiming for full capacity of 650,000 barrels later this year, Nigeria’s reliance on fuel imports has already dropped significantly, marking a step towards energy independence.

Retailers are expected to begin receiving allocations today, with full-scale distribution projected to roll out within days. Industry observers anticipate that this initiative will not only improve fuel accessibility but also drive job creation and boost investor confidence in Nigeria’s downstream sector. As the nation grapples with inflation and fuel supply challenges, Dangote’s bold move offers a glimmer of hope for more affordable and reliable energy access for millions of Nigerians.
