Osun State Launches Africa’s First Artificial Intelligence University In Modakeke.

Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, alongside the Ogunsua of Modakeke, Oba Joseph Olubiyi, laid the foundation for Curators University in Modakeke on Friday, 15 August 2025, marking a historic milestone as Africa’s first tertiary institution dedicated to Artificial Intelligence (AI). The groundbreaking ceremony signals Nigeria’s ambition to become a global hub for technological innovation, with the university poised to transform education and drive economic growth in the region.

Curators University will offer specialised programmes in Artificial Intelligence (Machine Learning Specialisation), Computer Hardware Engineering, Data Analytics and Database Administration, Arbitration and Conflict Resolution, and 3D Printing and Polymer Science. The institution aims to equip students with cutting-edge skills to address modern challenges and position Nigeria at the forefront of the global AI revolution.

Governor Adeleke, represented by the Commissioner for Information, Mr Dipo Eluwole, described the project as a landmark achievement that aligns with his administration’s commitment to advancing education and empowering youth. “The establishment of this university in Modakeke is a significant step towards strengthening our educational sector. I urge the founders to ensure it becomes one of Nigeria’s finest institutions, both academically and culturally,” he said.

The founder of Curators University, Mr Olusola Amusan, emphasised the importance of public-private partnerships (PPPs) in delivering world-class education. “Access to cutting-edge education comes at a cost, but through partnerships with government and private entities, we aim to support our students and the community. This university will foster innovation and economic development,” Amusan stated. He highlighted the role of federal education endowment funds and loan facilities in making the institution accessible.

Mr Abimbola Amusan, Chairman of the Curators University Groundbreaking Planning Committee, outlined the vision to transform the site into a global academic and innovation hub. “This university will empower young people, create jobs, and spark economic growth for generations,” he said. The Ogunsua of Modakeke, Oba Olubiyi, echoed this sentiment, urging Modakeke indigenes in the diaspora to follow the founder’s example and contribute to community development.

The launch of Curators University comes amid growing calls for AI skills development across Africa’s education sector, as experts advocate for integrating emerging technologies into academic curricula. The institution is expected to play a pioneering role in shaping the continent’s technological future, fostering innovation, and addressing unemployment by equipping graduates with globally competitive skills.
