Benin Football Legend Razak Omotoyossi Dies At 39.

Benin Republic and African football have been struck by tragedy with the passing of Razak Omotoyossi, a revered striker who died at his residence on Tuesday morning, 19 August 2025, at the age of 39. The Nigerian-born star, who represented Benin internationally, had been battling an illness prior to his untimely death, sources close to the family have confirmed.

Omotoyossi, widely regarded as one of Benin’s finest footballers, leaves behind a remarkable legacy. Born in Lagos, Nigeria, on 8 October 1985, he chose to play for Benin, earning 55 caps and scoring 21 goals for the national team. His standout moment came during the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, where he netted all four goals in Benin’s memorable 4-1 victory over Togo, a performance that saw him finish as joint-top scorer in the campaign alongside Cameroon’s Samuel Eto’o. His contributions on the international stage cemented his status as a hero in Benin, inspiring a generation of young footballers.

At club level, Omotoyossi enjoyed a distinguished career across multiple continents. He played for prominent clubs such as FC Metz in France, Helsingborgs IF in Sweden, and Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, showcasing his goal-scoring prowess and tireless work ethic. His time at Helsingborgs saw him shine in the UEFA Cup, where he scored six goals in eight matches, finishing as joint-fourth top scorer in the 2007-08 tournament. His journey also took him to Egypt, Libya, Syria, and Moldova, where his passion for the game and sharp eye for goal earned him admiration from fans and peers alike.

The news of his passing has sent shockwaves through the African football community, with tributes pouring in for the charismatic forward. Omotoyossi’s decision to represent Benin, despite his Nigerian roots, was a testament to his loyalty and pride in carrying the nation’s footballing hopes. His resilience, both on and off the pitch, made him a symbol of determination and sacrifice.

As the football world mourns, details surrounding the cause of his illness remain limited, with authorities and family yet to release an official statement. Fans and former teammates have taken to social media to express their grief, remembering Omotoyossi not only for his goals but for his infectious spirit and dedication to the sport.

Razak Omotoyossi’s legacy will endure in the hearts of those who watched him play and the young players he inspired. May his soul rest in peace.
