INEC Launches Nationwide Voter Registration For 2027 Elections

INEC Launches Nationwide Voter Registration For 2027 Elections.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has kicked off its Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, starting with an online pre-registration phase on Monday, 18 August 2025. This marks a significant step towards preparing for the 2027 general elections and the Anambra State governorship election scheduled for 8 November 2025. Eligible Nigerians are urged to begin their registration via the dedicated portal at www.cvr.inecnigeria.org, with physical registration set to commence on 25 August 2025.

The online pre-registration allows prospective voters, particularly those aged 18 and above, to input personal details such as names, dates of birth, residential addresses, and preferred polling units. The portal also facilitates requests for transferring voting locations, replacing lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), or correcting personal information. INEC has reported an impressive early response, with 69,376 Nigerians pre-registering within seven hours of the portal going live, including 51.3% female and 48.7% male registrants, and 69.2% aged 18-34.

From 25 August, in-person registration will begin at INEC’s 37 state offices and 774 local government area offices across Nigeria, operating from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, Monday to Friday. The commission plans to expand to additional designated centres based on assessments of the CVR’s progress and security considerations. INEC has warned against multiple registrations, emphasising that violators face penalties under Nigeria’s electoral laws.

INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, described the CVR as a critical step for inclusive participation in Nigeria’s democratic process. “Your PVC is your key to making your voice heard,” he stated, encouraging eligible citizens to register early to avoid last-minute rushes. The commission has also introduced a portal feature allowing voters to check the status of their voter cards and locate registration or collection centres.

The CVR, which will run until 30 August 2026, aims to ensure a credible voter register for the 2027 elections. INEC has partnered with the National Orientation Agency to enhance voter education and outreach, using both traditional and digital tools to mobilise participation. Political stakeholders have called for a hitch-free exercise, urging INEC to address past logistical challenges, such as portal accessibility, to ensure a seamless process.

As Nigeria gears up for its next electoral cycle, the CVR offers a vital opportunity for citizens to engage in shaping the nation’s future. Eligible voters are encouraged to act promptly, with INEC providing support through its call centre on 0700-CALL-INEC (0700-2255-4632) for any inquiries.
