Ekiti Governor Oyebanji Appeals For Peace Ahead Of 2026 Election, Urges End To Political Violence.

Ado-Ekiti, 3 September 2025 – Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji has called for calm and unity among residents as political activities intensify ahead of the June 2026 governorship election, stressing that his ambition for a second term is “not worth the precious blood of any Ekiti person.” In a statewide broadcast aired on Tuesday across radio and television stations, the governor condemned recent incidents of political violence, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to maintaining the state’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s most peaceful regions.

Oyebanji, addressing concerns over orchestrated attacks allegedly linked to political actors, expressed alarm at the resurgence of thuggery in parts of the state. He noted that Ekiti has enjoyed over two years of relative peace under his leadership, with previous gubernatorial elections in 2018 and 2022 setting a benchmark for civility. “The recent incidents are a condemnable drawback that must not be allowed to fester,” he said, urging political leaders to rein in their supporters and prioritise peace over personal ambition. “The seed of our ambition should not be nurtured with the blood of our followers,” he added.

The governor’s remarks follow reports of coordinated media attacks and violent campaigns aimed at discrediting his administration, which he described as attempts to destabilise Ekiti’s peaceful political environment. Oyebanji, who formally declared his intention to seek re-election under the All Progressives Congress (APC) in August, assured residents that security agencies have been briefed to prevent any breakdown of law and order. “No one is allowed to bully, intimidate, or coerce another person. Every Ekiti citizen has a right to freely move around and peacefully canvass for votes,” he stated.

Oyebanji highlighted his inclusive governance approach, noting that his administration has appointed opposition members and engaged former rivals to foster unity. He cited achievements in infrastructure, education, agriculture, and security, including significant investments in Ekiti State University and the clearing of salary backlogs for tertiary institution workers. His leadership has garnered widespread support, with over 130 groups, including the Ekiti State University Alumni Association and pan-Yoruba organisations, endorsing his re-election bid.

The broadcast comes amid tensions within the APC, with aspirant Kayode Ojo accusing Oyebanji of intimidating party officials to suppress competition ahead of the October 2025 primaries. Oyebanji, however, maintained that any aspirant is free to contest the party’s ticket, urging supporters to avoid provocation and uphold Ekiti’s tradition of peaceful elections. As the state prepares for the 2026 polls, the governor’s call for unity and non-violence underscores his determination to preserve Ekiti’s progress and harmony.
