President Bola Tinubu has directed the Federal Executive Council (FEC) to implement measures to reduce food prices nationwide.
Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, revealed the directive, focusing on safe passage of agricultural produce across transport routes.
“The President has given a matching order with a federal executive council committee already handling it on how we are going to promote safe passage of agricultural foods and commodities across our various routes in the country,” Abdullahi said.
The move aims to cut logistics costs driving up food prices amid worsening insecurity and high transport costs following fuel subsidy removal.
Abdullahi emphasized the directive aligns with Tinubu’s food sovereignty vision, ensuring affordability, accessibility, and nutrition sustainably. Supporting initiatives include the Farmer Soil Health Scheme and revamped cooperative reforms.
“Mr. President has shown tremendous interest in the cooperative sector as a veritable tool for resource mobilization, for economic activity generation, and to improve the livelihood of members,” Abdullahi added.
Tinubu previously stated, “We must learn to produce and grow most of our food, and we are on the path to achieving food sovereignty,” targeting 7% medium-term growth and a stronger manufacturing base.
