In tribute to International Women’s Day, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has announced it’s commitment to advancing gender equality. Led by Administrator Samantha Power, USAID has pledged to double its support for gender equality initiatives to a historic high of $2.6 billion.
This was disclosed during the heels of the International Women of Courage Awards Ceremony held at the White House, where Fatima and 11 other women were honored for their dedication to driving progress within their communities. Among these trailblazers is Fariba Balouch, a fearless advocate for the marginalized Baluch community in Iran. Despite facing severe oppression from the Iranian government, Fariba’s relentless activism has inspired change and resilience.
USAID’s increased investment will focus on a variety of initiatives aimed at breaking down barriers that hinder women’s full participation and equal benefit across various sectors. Programs like Generating Resilience and Opportunities for Women will tackle obstacles in agricultural and food-related work, while the Women in the Digital Economy Initiative aims to bridge the gender digital divide. Additionally, the Women in the Sustainable Economy Initiative will foster women’s leadership in critical sectors like energy and natural resource management.
USAID however is committed to prioritizing family planning and reproductive health, with a substantial investment of $557 million in partner countries. This funding will ensure access to evidence-based, high-quality maternal and reproductive healthcare, empowering women and girls to make informed choices about their futures and lead healthy, productive lives.
Administrator Power stated that gender equality is not just a moral imperative but a strategic necessity. She stressed on the interconnectedness of gender equality with various global challenges, including poverty reduction, disease prevention, and climate adaptation.
