Amaju Pinnick Appointed Special Adviser To CAF President.

Former Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president Amaju Melvin Pinnick has been named Special Adviser to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) President, Patrice Motsepe, in a move that marks his return to the continental football stage. The appointment, announced on 5 July 2025 during CAF’s executive committee meeting in Rabat, Morocco, was ratified immediately, granting Pinnick the privilege of attending all CAF executive meetings in his new advisory role.

Pinnick, who served as NFF president from 2014 to 2022, brings a wealth of experience to the position. His tenure at the NFF saw significant milestones, including Nigeria’s qualification for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. He also played a pivotal role in Motsepe’s election as CAF president in 2021, rallying support across the continent. Previously, Pinnick served as CAF’s First Vice President from 2018 to 2019 under Ahmad Ahmad’s presidency and was a member of the FIFA Council, making him the third Nigerian to hold such a position after Oyo Orok Oyo and Amos Adamu.

CAF President Motsepe, during a live-streamed press conference, expressed admiration for Pinnick’s standing in African football, remarking, “I did not know Amaju is so loved in CAF.” The appointment has been widely celebrated, with many viewing it as recognition of Pinnick’s contributions to the development of football on the continent. However, it has also sparked debate, with some questioning the decision given past controversies during his NFF tenure, including unproven allegations of corruption.

The 54-year-old’s new role is expected to strengthen CAF’s administrative framework as it prepares for major tournaments, such as the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2026 African Nations Championship. Pinnick’s return signals a renewed opportunity to influence the growth of African football, leveraging his extensive network and expertise.
