In a recent UN Security Council briefing, Ambassador Robert Wood, the U.S. Alternative Representative for Special Political Affairs emphasized the urgent need for political unity in Libya.
Speaking on August 20, 2024, Ambassador Wood expressed deep concern over the ongoing political stalemate in Libya and warned against the dangers of further division.
He urged all parties within Libya to engage in dialogue to achieve a peaceful compromise that would reunify the country.
Ambassador Wood stressed the importance of supporting the Secretary-General’s efforts, aligned with Security Council Resolution 2702, to develop a credible roadmap toward free and fair national elections.
These elections, he stated, are essential for establishing a representative and accountable government that reflects the will of the Libyan people.
Highlighting the instability along Libya’s southern borders, Ambassador Wood called for the reunification of Libyan military and security institutions. He argued that such progress would reaffirm Libyan sovereignty and prevent the country from becoming entangled in regional conflicts.
The Ambassador also addressed economic concerns, particularly the ongoing dispute over the Central Bank of Libya (CBL). He warned that unilateral attempts to replace the CBL governor could jeopardize Libya’s standing in global financial markets.
Wood urged all sides to de-escalate tensions and return to negotiations to ensure equitable and transparent distribution of Libya’s resources.
Regarding sanctions, Wood expressed serious concern over reports of Russian naval vessels unloading military materiel and personnel in Libya. He emphasized the need for full transparency and adherence to the arms embargo imposed by the UN.
