The Anioma State Creation Movement has applauded the National Assembly Joint Committee on Constitution Review for endorsing the creation of a new state in the Southeast.
The group described the move as “bold and historic,” aimed at addressing regional imbalances and promoting fairness within Nigeria’s federal structure.
The Southeast remains the only geopolitical zone with five states, Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo, while other zones have six states each, except the Northwest, which has seven. The Anioma Movement sees this endorsement as a step toward ensuring justice for the Igbo nation and fulfilling constitutional promises of equity across the country.
Chief Barrister Ronnie Osita Oganah, Media Director of the movement, expressed gratitude to the National Assembly for acknowledging the Southeast’s long-standing call for parity. He noted that the decision reflects a commitment to inclusion and national balance, while emphasizing that the proposed state is an integral part of the Igbo nation.
The Anioma people view the proposal as a crucial step to equalizing the Igbo nation. Oganah added that while political detractors may attempt to undermine the initiative, the ultimate decision will rest with the referendum and the will of the Anioma people.
The movement further highlighted potential economic benefits, explaining that the creation of the new state could generate employment, empower young people, and boost local development. The initiative has received backing from key lawmakers, including Senator Ned Nwoko, who is working toward making Anioma State a reality.
Supporters of the proposal believe that the endorsement marks the beginning of a historic journey toward regional justice and equity. The Anioma State Creation Movement remains committed to ensuring that the aspirations of its people are realized through lawful and democratic means.
