Arsenal Fined £65,000 Over Player Reaction To Lewis-Skelly Red Card

Referee Michael Oliver shows Red Card To Arsenal's Myles Lewis-Skelly who turned away while being surrounded by Wolves Players

Arsenal Fined £65,000 Over Player Reaction To Lewis-Skelly Red Card.

Arsenal have been handed a £65,000 fine by the FA following their players’ conduct during the Premier League clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers on 25 January 2025 at Molineux Stadium.

In the 43rd minute of the match, referee Michael Oliver issued a straight red card to 18‐year‐old defender Myles Lewis-Skelly for a foul on Wolves’ Matt Doherty. The decision prompted an immediate protest from several Arsenal players, who surrounded Oliver in an attempt to challenge the call. Despite the red card being overturned on appeal – with Lewis-Skelly’s three-match suspension rescinded – the FA maintained that the players’ reaction breached Rule E20.1, which obliges clubs to ensure that their representatives behave in an orderly manner.

An independent Regulatory Commission later imposed the fine, noting that at times as many as nine Arsenal players were in very close proximity to the referee during the incident. The FA’s official statement clarified that while the overturning of the red card acknowledged the questionable nature of the initial decision, it did not excuse the players’ conduct.

Arsenal eventually secured a 1-0 victory, with Riccardo Calafiori scoring the decisive goal in the 74th minute. However, the fine – more than three times the standard penalty of £20,000 for similar offences – underscores ongoing concerns over player discipline under manager Mikel Arteta.

As the Gunners continue their campaign, the club will need to address these behavioural issues to avoid further scrutiny and potential repercussions from the authorities.
