ASUU Urges Federal Government To Honor 2022 Agreement, Warns Of Possible Strike

The Yola zone of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called on the federal government to stop delaying the implementation of agreed-upon terms, urging immediate action to avoid further disruption in Nigeria’s higher education system.

In a statement released on Wednesday, October 2, ASUU’s Yola Zone emphasised the need for the government to fully implement the agreements reached in 2022, which led to the suspension of a previous strike. The statement comes just a week before the expiration of a new two-week ultimatum issued by ASUU’s national leadership.

The Yola Zone, which comprises six branches—Modibbo Adama University Yola, University of Maiduguri, Federal University Gashua, Taraba State University Jalingo, Adamawa State University Mubi, and Yobe State University Damaturu—expressed frustration with the government’s failure to honour its commitments.

“It does not make sense for the federal government to consistently renege on the agreement,” said ASUU Yola Zonal Chairman, Dani Mamman. The union emphasised that the federal government’s failure to implement multiple memoranda of understanding between 2013 and 2022 has undermined industrial harmony in public universities.

ASUU also reminded the government that it had issued a 21-day ultimatum on August 21, 2024, for resolving long-standing issues dating back to 2009, but no significant progress has been made. The union warned that if no concrete actions are taken by the end of the additional two-week period, its members would not hesitate to withdraw their services once again.
