The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially announced that Wednesday, May 27, and Thursday, May 28, 2026, will be public holidays in celebration of Eid-el-Kabir, also known as Eid-ul-Adha. This news was shared by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement that was signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Magdalene Ajani.

Overview of the Declaration

According to the Federal Government, the two-day holiday is designed to give Muslim faithful across Nigeria the opportunity to celebrate one of Islam’s most cherished festivals. The government highlighted that this declaration shows its respect for the deep religious and spiritual importance of Eid-el-Kabir for millions of Muslims both in Nigeria and around the globe.

In the official statement, the Minister extended warm congratulations to Muslims in Nigeria and those living abroad, describing Eid-ul-Adha as:

Imagine a festival that holds deep spiritual meaning, rooted in the principles of sacrifice, devotion to God, and kindness towards others.

Significance of Eid-el-Kabir

Eid al-Adha, often referred to as Eid-el-Kabir in Nigeria, celebrates the profound willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son in obedience to God’s command, before a ram was provided as a substitute. This festival embodies themes of faith, sacrifice, obedience, charity, and devotion.

Observed by Muslims around the world, it coincides with the annual Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia. During this time, Muslims come together for prayers, engage in charitable acts, share meals, and sacrifice animals like rams to honor Prophet Ibrahim’s act of faith.

Government’s Message to Nigerians

The Federal Government took this opportunity to encourage Nigerians to come together in prayer for peace, unity, security, and prosperity in the nation. The Minister urged everyone to take some time during the holiday to reflect deeply and work towards national reconciliation, especially in light of the ongoing socio-economic and security challenges facing the country.

The statement further emphasized the need for:

  • Peaceful coexistence among Nigerians
  • Religious tolerance and unity
  • Compassion toward the less privileged
  • National solidarity during the festive season

The government also urged everyone to come together and celebrate our shared humanity and sense of brotherhood during the festivities.

Economic and Social Implications

The declaration of public holidays for Eid-el-Kabir is expected to have both social and economic impacts across Nigeria.

Social Impact

  • Increased interstate travel as many Nigerians return to their hometowns for celebrations.
  • Enhanced communal bonding through family gatherings and religious activities.
  • Heightened commercial activities related to livestock sales, food markets, transportation, and hospitality.

Economic Impact

  • Temporary closure of banks, government offices, and some private institutions during the holiday period.
  • Increased spending in local markets, especially in livestock and food sectors.
  • Possible rise in transportation fares due to increased passenger movement nationwide.

Livestock markets in key cities like Lagos, Abuja, and Kano are gearing up for a bustling wave of commercial activity as the celebration approaches.

Reactions and Public Expectations

The announcement has been met with a warm reception from the Muslim community and many Nigerians, who see these public holidays as a chance to relax, engage in worship, and spend quality time with family.

Religious leaders are urging worshippers to celebrate in a responsible manner and to show compassion by helping those in need through acts of charity and kindness.

During the festivities, security agencies are gearing up to enhance surveillance and ensure public safety, particularly in major cities and along highways, to promote peaceful celebrations across the country.

Conclusion

The announcement that Wednesday and Thursday will be public holidays for Eid-el-Kabir highlights the significance of fostering religious harmony and cultural inclusiveness in Nigeria. As Muslims nationwide gear up for this sacred festival, the Federal Government has reaffirmed its dedication to nurturing unity, peace, and national cohesion.

This celebration is set to unite millions of Nigerians in prayer, reflection, and joyful festivities, while also boosting the economic activities that come with this festive season.
