Tobi Amusan Leads Nigeria to Gold in 4x100m Relay at African Championships.

The President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Tonobok Okowa, expressed immense joy after witnessing Tobi Amusan, the World Record Holder in women’s 100m hurdles, inspire Team Nigeria’s women’s 4x100m relay team to victory at the 23rd African Senior Athletics Championships held at Japoma Stadium.

Amusan, in outstanding form, ‘flew’ down the track to secure Nigeria’s fourth gold medal at the Championships. The victorious quartet, anchored by Amusan, included Justina Eyakpobeyan, Tima Godbless, and Olayinka Olajide.

Despite missing her 100m hurdles event due to illness, Amusan made a remarkable recovery to participate in the relay final. President Okowa, who was initially concerned upon seeing Amusan’s condition upon arrival in Douala, expressed his relief and gratitude.

“I was really worried upon my arrival in Douala when I saw Amusan’s condition,” Okowa said. “I was at the airport when I received the news and rushed to the athletes’ hotel to see her. At that time, she was quite unwell, and I prayed fervently for divine intervention. I am pleased that God answered our prayers.”

Okowa, also serving as Vice President of the Confederation of African Athletics, praised Amusan’s performance and dedication. “I was thrilled to see Tobi perform so well on the track and secure gold. This kind of performance can only come from an athlete who is dedicated and loyal to her country. I applaud her courage and sense of humour.”

He also commended the entire team and officials for their efforts. “I commend all the athletes and officials who have contributed to our success story here in Douala. Our next stop will be Paris for the Olympic Games, and I am confident that our athletes will represent us admirably.”

Amusan arrived in Douala on Thursday morning with the Nigerian contingent, initially showing no signs of illness. However, she fell ill later that evening. Medical personnel from the Sports Ministry, attached to the AFN team, advised her to rest, which she did. She later participated in the 4x100m relay final after the AFN Technical Director, Samuel Onikeku, presented a medical report on her condition, unlike Favour Ofili and Rosemary Chukwuma, who withdrew from the 100m semifinal without informing the technical committee.
