With 16 days to the commencement of the 2023 general election, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to remove the Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, in Lagos State, Olusegun Agbaje. Atiku said Agbaje had been accused of attempting to compromise the upcoming election. Hours after the Supreme Court stopped the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN from executing the February 10 deadline for the validity of old naira notes, the governor of the apex bank, Godwin Emefiele met with President Muhammadu Buhari. Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has commended the Supreme Court for saving Nigerians and democracy by restraining the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, from implementing the February 10 deadline on the phasing out of N200, N500 and N1000 old notes. The Supreme Court of Nigeria has restrained the Federal Government from continuing with the full implementation of the demonetization policy. Three northern states, Kaduna, Kogi and Zamfara, had, in a motion ex-parte filed on February 3rd, prayed the apex court to halt the Central Bank of Nigeria’s naira redesign policy. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board said it cancelled the registrations of no fewer than 817 candidates that registered to sit the 2023 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations and Direct Entry examinations. The examination body said it made the decision owing to the discovery of certain infractions such as use of strange biometrics during the registration process. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Lagos State says a total of 6,708,451 voters collected the Permanent Voter Card (PVC) out of the 7,637,402 voters that registered in the state. Mrs Adenike Tadese, INEC’s Head of Voter Education and Publicity in Lagos State, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Lagos that the figure represented 87.8 per cent.
