Benue Massacre: Nigerian Military Chief Advocates Tough Stance On Illegal Arms And Resistance

Benue Massacre: Nigerian Military Chief Advocates Tough Stance On Illegal Arms And Resistance.

Yelwata, Nigeria – 28 June 2025: Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has sparked intense debate with a bold statement calling for decisive action against individuals carrying illegal arms or resisting arrest. Speaking in Yelwata, General Musa declared that those engaging in such acts should face lethal force, underscoring the military’s commitment to tackling rising insecurity across the nation.

In a video address shared widely on social media, General Musa emphasized the need for a hardline approach to curb the proliferation of illegal weapons and restore order in regions plagued by banditry, insurgency, and other forms of violent crime. “Those carrying arms illegally or resisting arrest are a threat to national security. They should be shot,” he stated, highlighting the urgency of addressing Nigeria’s escalating security challenges.

The remarks come amid ongoing military operations in Nigeria’s northern regions, particularly in Yelwata, where armed groups have wreaked havoc on communities. General Musa’s comments reflect the government’s growing frustration with the persistent threat posed by non-state actors, including Boko Haram insurgents and armed bandits. He argued that such measures are necessary to protect law-abiding citizens and deter criminal elements.

However, the statement has drawn mixed reactions. Supporters of the CDS argue that Nigeria’s security situation demands a robust response, pointing to the increasing sophistication of criminal networks and the widespread availability of illegal firearms. “The military must act decisively to restore peace. General Musa is right to take a firm stand,” said Ahmed Yusuf, a local community leader in Yelwata.

Critics, however, have raised concerns about the implications of such a policy, warning of potential human rights abuses and the risk of excessive force. Human rights organizations have called for restraint, urging the military to adhere to international standards and prioritize non-lethal methods of law enforcement. “While we acknowledge the security challenges, summary executions are unacceptable and could escalate tensions,” said Aisha Mohammed, a spokesperson for a local advocacy group.

The Nigerian government has yet to issue an official response to General Musa’s remarks, but they align with recent efforts to strengthen security measures, including increased military deployments and collaboration with regional forces. The CDS also highlighted ongoing initiatives to improve intelligence-gathering and community engagement to address the root causes of insecurity.

As Nigeria grapples with multifaceted threats, General Musa’s statement has ignited a broader conversation about balancing security imperatives with the protection of civil liberties. The government faces mounting pressure to address both the symptoms and causes of violence, including poverty, unemployment, and weak governance, which continue to fuel unrest.

For now, the CDS’s call for lethal action against illegal arms bearers and those resisting arrest underscores the military’s resolve to confront Nigeria’s security crisis head-on. As the nation watches closely, the debate over the best path forward remains as urgent as ever.
