Benue State University (BSU) has recently taken a decisive step in molding a disciplined campus culture by introducing a comprehensive dress code.
The university’s management, through a task force committee, has outlined specific guidelines, including the prohibition of dreadlock hairstyles, miniskirts, and various other attire considered inappropriate.
This move, communicated through a statement issued on Saturday, underscores the institution’s commitment to maintaining a certain standard of decorum both on and off-campus. The task force committee emphasized that any student found violating the approved dress code would face sanctions from the university.
The guidelines for boys are explicit, covering aspects such as sagging, makeup, dreadlocking of hair (dada), hair dyeing, wearing shorts or three-quarter trousers to lectures, uncombed hair, wearing armless shirts, earrings, plaiting of hair, keeping heavy beards, and other perceived indecencies.
Girls are similarly expected to adhere to a set of rules, including avoiding body-hugging clothes, hair dyeing, short skirts, exposure of sensitive body parts, leg chains, nose rings, and multiple earrings.
The statement further dictates specific color restrictions, with only black and brown color attachments permitted. Folding of shirts on trousers or skirts is discouraged, and there is a ban on “crazy trousers” and leggings without a long top (shirt), among other related indecencies.
Students at BSU are urged to conscientiously adhere to these rules to avoid facing sanctions imposed by the university’s management.
