On the occasion of the International Day for People of African Descent, the Biden administration in the United States celebrates the contributions of individuals of African descent across the globe while reaffirming its dedication to eliminating discrimination and promoting equity.
President Joe Biden, from his first day in office, has consistently prioritised racial equity and justice, recognising them as ongoing commitments for his administration.
In line with this commitment, President Biden is set to launch the inaugural President’s Advisory Council on African Diaspora Engagement in the United States. This initiative aims to advance equity for the African Diaspora within the U.S. and on a global scale.
The administration acknowledges that systemic racism, discrimination, and human rights violations against people of African descent persist in societies marked by the enduring legacy of enslavement.
These challenges extend beyond borders and require collective efforts to address them comprehensively.
With the International Decade for People of African Descent coming to its final year in 2023, the Biden administration emphasises the need to intensify efforts, not diminish them.
It calls for a stronger commitment to respecting the human rights and fundamental freedoms of individuals of African descent, with the aim of benefiting all people for generations to come.
Biden aptly stated, “Advancing equity is not a one-year project. It’s a generational commitment.”
