Brazil Shuts Down 2,000 Betting Sites Amidst Debt Crisis.
The Brazilian government has commenced the shutdown of over 2,000 betting websites, including several that sponsor major football clubs such as Corinthians, as part of a sweeping move to regulate the country’s online gambling industry.
Finance Minister Fernando Haddad referred to the unregulated gambling landscape as a “betting pandemic,” with illegal betting platforms having operated freely since 2018. The new regulations, set to take effect in January, are designed to curb fraudulent activities and protect users, with a particular focus on banning minors from participating in online betting.
The government has identified 2,040 sites for closure, while more than 200 platforms that have agreed to comply with the updated regulations will be allowed to continue their operations. The initiative follows concerns raised by President Lula, who has cautioned that unregulated online gambling is driving low-income Brazilians deeper into debt.
The move is part of Brazil’s broader efforts to bring accountability and protection to the online betting industry, while addressing the financial strain it has placed on vulnerable populations.
