Manchester City Wins Legal Challenge Against Premier League’s APT Rules.
Manchester City has emerged victorious in its legal challenge against the Premier League’s Associated Party Transaction (APT) rules, which govern commercial agreements between clubs and their related companies. The tribunal ruled that two aspects of the APT regulations were unlawful, giving City a partial win.
The APT rules aim to regulate the value of sponsorship deals linked to club owners. In the ruling, the tribunal declared that shareholder loans should not fall under the scope of APT regulations and that certain amendments made by the Premier League in February should be removed.
However, the Premier League noted that the tribunal rejected most of Manchester City’s objections, affirming the overall purpose and structure of the APT system.
This legal case is separate from the Premier League’s ongoing disciplinary proceedings, where City faces 115 charges related to breaches of financial regulations, dating back to 2009.
In this arbitration process, clubs such as Chelsea, Newcastle, Nottingham Forest, and Everton acted as witnesses in favour of Manchester City, while Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham, Brighton, and West Ham supported the Premier League’s stance.
The decision marks an important victory for City but leaves the broader financial regulations case still unresolved.
