Urum Kalu Eke, a nominee for membership of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Board of Directors, has declined his appointment, claiming he already works for the World Bank.
This was revealed on Thursday during a plenary session in the Senate, where the confirmation process for nominees was underway.
President Bola Tinubu had nominated Urum Kalu Eke along with four others for confirmation as members of the CBN board on February 13. However, during the confirmation proceedings, Senator Orji Kalu, representing Abia North under the APC, informed the Senate that Eke had communicated his rejection of the offer.
Senator Kalu relayed that Eke expressed concerns that the role at CBN would clash with his responsibilities as a consultant for the World Bank, various Federal Government agencies, and private companies.
Despite Eke’s withdrawal, the Senate proceeded to confirm the appointments of the four other nominees to the CBN Board of Directors. The newly appointed directors are Robert Agbede, Ado Yakubu Wanka, Professor Murtala Sabo Sagagi, and Mrs. Muslimat Olanike Aliyu.
The confirmation followed the consideration of a report presented by Senator Adetokunbo Abiru, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance & Other Financial Institutions.
Senator Abiru stated that Urum Kalu Eke was not cleared by the Committee due to his absence during the screening process.
