President Bola Tinubu has announced a major shake-up in Nigeria’s military hierarchy, appointing General Olufemi Oluyede as the new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) while relieving other top service chiefs of their duties.

The development marks one of the most significant changes in the nation’s security structure since the start of his administration.

In a statement released on Friday by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, the President said the decision was aimed at enhancing the operational efficiency and effectiveness of the Armed Forces. Tinubu’s announcement also included the immediate replacement of the Chief of Army Staff, Chief of Naval Staff, and Chief of Air Staff, although the identities of the new appointees were not immediately disclosed.

According to the statement, General Oluyede’s appointment takes immediate effect following the removal of General Christopher Musa, who previously held the position of Chief of Defence Staff. The President expressed confidence that Oluyede’s leadership will strengthen national security and further coordinate joint operations across military formations.

The changes come amid rising security challenges across several regions, with Tinubu reportedly seeking to inject “fresh energy” into the country’s defence leadership. “The President believes the restructuring will improve coordination among the services and ensure a more proactive approach to combating threats against Nigeria’s unity,” the statement added.

Reactions have begun to trail the development as political observers and security analysts described the move as a bold step toward revitalizing the military’s command structure. Many have called on the new defence chief to prioritize collaboration with intelligence agencies to tackle terrorism, banditry, and insurgency more decisively.

As the transition process begins, the President is expected to meet with the newly appointed chiefs to outline his administration’s defence strategy and ensure a seamless handover from the outgoing officers. The Presidency assured Nigerians that the move reflects Tinubu’s continued commitment to national stability and security reforms.
