The Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Geoffrey Uche Nnaji, has resigned from President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet following mounting allegations of certificate forgery.
In his resignation letter reportedly submitted to the Presidency on Monday night, Nnaji stated, “I have chosen to step aside in order not to allow the current controversy to distract the government from its focus on national development.”
Presidency sources confirmed that Nnaji’s decision came amid pressure from senior officials and public calls for an investigation into discrepancies in his academic records. One official noted, “The President was already briefed on the issue, and a panel was being considered before the resignation came in.”
The forgery allegation, which surfaced on social media weeks ago, drew widespread reactions from civic groups and political observers, who demanded transparency in the government’s vetting process.
A senior aide to the minister confirmed his exit, saying, “He believes in accountability and wants a fair process to establish the truth. His resignation shows respect for the integrity of the administration.”
The Presidency is expected to appoint an acting minister to oversee the ministry’s affairs pending further directives from the President.
