Bayern Munich Suffer First League Defeat Under Kompany As Mainz Triumph.
Bayern Munich endured their first Bundesliga defeat under manager Vincent Kompany after a 2-1 loss to Mainz, as the hosts capitalised on defensive errors to claim a deserved victory.
South Korean forward Lee Jae-sung emerged as the star for Mainz, opening the scoring in the 41st minute after a costly mistake at the back by Bayern. Lee doubled his tally on the hour mark with an impressive turn and finish, leaving the visitors struggling to respond.
Leroy Sane provided a late glimmer of hope for Bayern, pulling one back three minutes before the final whistle. However, the defending champions were unable to find an equaliser, a task made more challenging by the absence of key players, including England striker Harry Kane, due to injury.
Speaking after the match, Kompany acknowledged his side’s struggles: “We played against a team with a lot of life and spirit, and they were prepared to fight for every moment. From our side, there was no lack of effort, but today we were not at our best.”
The Belgian manager urged his team to move on quickly, adding: “This game is done. We’ll use it to build a fire for next week.”
The result allowed defending champions Bayer Leverkusen to narrow the gap at the top of the table. Leverkusen secured a 2-0 victory at Augsburg, with goals from Martin Terrier and Florian Wirtz, a reported target for Manchester City.
Bayern remain top of the Bundesliga but now sit just four points clear of Leverkusen as the title race begins to intensify.
