Afrobeats superstar Burna Boy has stirred fresh debate in the music industry after declaring that the late Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo Kuti is the only musician greater than him.

The Grammy-winning singer made the bold statement while reflecting on his musical journey and the influence of Fela on his art.

Burna Boy, whose real name is Damini Ogulu, said his inspiration and style are deeply rooted in the revolutionary sounds and messages of Fela Kuti. According to him, no other artist from Nigeria or Africa has matched his impact and consistency apart from the Afrobeat pioneer.

“Only Fela greater than me,” he said, describing himself as the torchbearer of a generation that continues Fela’s vision of African pride and global recognition. The singer noted that his music carries the same spirit of truth and resilience that defined Fela’s era.

He also pointed out that his international success, including multiple Grammy nominations and sold-out shows worldwide, has placed Nigerian music on the global stage. Burna Boy added that Fela remains a timeless figure whose legacy transcends generations.

The self-acclaimed “African Giant” maintained that his achievements should be seen as a continuation of Fela’s dream for African unity through music. “Fela paved the way, and I took the sound to new places,” he reportedly said.

Burna Boy’s statement has since attracted mixed reactions among fans and music lovers, with many acknowledging his achievements while others believe several contemporary acts also deserve recognition.
