Canada has announced an extension to the duration of validity for interim work authorization letters issued to international graduates awaiting decisions on their work permit applications.
Under the new directive, interim work authorization letters will now be valid for 180 days from the time of application submission, a notable increase from the previous 120-day validity period.
Interim work authorization letters, issued by Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), serve as essential documents indicating eligibility for international graduates to commence work while awaiting final decisions on their work permit applications.
This provision offers graduates the opportunity to engage in full-time employment without a formal work permit, provided they meet specific conditions set forth by IRCC.
To qualify for an interim work authorization letter, international graduates must meet several criteria, including holding a valid study permit at the time of submitting their work permit application, successfully completing their program of study, and meeting requirements for working off-campus without a work permit as outlined by IRCC.
Additionally, applicants with an interim work authorization letter are permitted to continue working in Canada even after leaving and returning to the country, although a valid temporary resident visa may be necessary for re-entry.
It’s important to note that an interim work authorization letter does not serve as a travel document, according to clarification provided by IRCC.
In cases where 180 days pass without a decision on an application, applicants have the option to request continued proof of authorization to work from IRCC through the IRCC webform, ensuring uninterrupted employment status while awaiting final decisions on their applications.
