Cholera Outbreak Strikes Niger State Communities

Cholera Outbreak Strikes Niger State Communities.

Niger State Government has confirmed a cholera outbreak in Katcha Local Government Area, affecting several residents in the region. This announcement was made by Muhammad Gana, the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Health, who addressed journalists on the situation.

In response to the outbreak, the Ministry of Health has swiftly deployed a team of healthcare professionals to the affected community, along with essential medical supplies, in a bid to contain the spread of the disease.

Meanwhile, concerns are growing in Paiko, Paikoro Local Government Area, where suspected cholera cases have been reported. During a visit by Daily Post.

It was observed that Paiko Modern Clinic had set up a dedicated ward for patients exhibiting cholera symptoms. A healthcare worker at the facility, who wished to remain anonymous, confirmed at least four new cases, and unconfirmed reports suggest several deaths have already occurred. The head of the hospital has yet to comment on the matter.

A major challenge facing the Paiko clinic is the lack of clean water, with relatives of patients enduring difficulties in sourcing water to care for their loved ones due to a broken-down borehole at the facility. Families have called on local authorities to repair the borehole to alleviate this hardship.

While the cholera outbreak in Katcha has been confirmed, Dr. Muhammad Gana noted that the Ministry of Health has not yet received official reports of an outbreak in Paikoro LG. He also emphasised the importance of maintaining personal and environmental hygiene, as cholera is closely linked to water and sanitation issues.

The state government is facing additional concerns as it currently does not have vaccines available to combat the spread of cholera, creating further apprehension in affected communities.

Residents are urged to take precautionary measures, including ensuring access to clean water and maintaining sanitary conditions to mitigate the spread of the disease.

The situation is being closely monitored, and further updates are expected as health officials continue their efforts to contain the outbreak.
