Concerns Grow Over Safety Of New Pedestrian Bridge Near Lagos State University.
Residents of Ojo, particularly around the Lagos State University area at Iyana Iba, have expressed growing concerns over the persistent presence of miscreants on a newly constructed pedestrian bridge in the locality.
The bridge, which has not yet been officially commissioned for use, is reportedly being occupied by homeless individuals, scavengers, and thugs, raising fears for the safety of students and residents alike. Locals have warned that the structure is gradually being taken over by hoodlums, posing a potential threat to public safety.
In an interview with Saturday PUNCH, resident Precious Chukwu voiced her apprehension about using the bridge, describing it as increasingly unsafe. She highlighted that the individuals occupying the structure appeared menacing and could pose a danger to passersby.
“Seeing those people on the bridge won’t even allow you to pass there. You can’t even tell if they are mad. They look too dangerous and fearful,” she said. “The government should protect passersby before the bridge is opened. As a woman, I doubt if I can pass there, because I would be scared of being raped.”
Residents are calling on the authorities to take swift action to secure the bridge and ensure it is safe for public use. Many emphasised the need for a security presence to deter further occupation and to safeguard commuters, particularly vulnerable groups such as women and students.
The call for intervention comes as the bridge, intended to improve pedestrian safety, now risks becoming a hotspot for criminal activities if urgent measures are not taken.
