Confusion Looms Over Olubadan Succession Process Amid Health Concerns

A cloud of uncertainty envelops the succession proceedings for the revered position of Olubadan of Ibadan land, as suspicions mount over a potential boycott by members of the Olubadan-in-Council during an upcoming meeting.

The meeting, scheduled for tomorrow, was anticipated to declare Oba Owolabi Olakulehin as the Olubadan-designate, yet doubts persist surrounding his candidature, particularly regarding his health.

Speculation surrounding Oba Olakulehin’s absence has intensified among stakeholders following the passing of Oba Lekan Balogun on March 14th.

The Otun Balogun of Ibadan, Oba Tajudeen Ajibola, voiced concerns on Tuesday, alleging that Olakulehin is not medically fit to ascend to the throne.

Addressing reporters, Oba Ajibola highlighted his reservations regarding Olakulehin’s readiness for the position. He questioned the rush to pronounce Olakulehin as the Olubadan-designate, suggesting it may be driven by personal interests rather than adherence to due process. Ajibola emphasised the importance of Olakulehin’s physical well-being and urged for proper medical assessments before any official pronouncements are made.

Ajibola’s statements have stirred debate among influential individuals within the community, with some expressing solidarity with his concerns. They assert that Governor Seyi Makinde should appoint physicians to evaluate Olakulehin’s health, as stipulated by the 1957 Olubadan Chieftaincy Declaration, which mandates that the incoming Olubadan must be medically fit to rule.

As the community awaits clarity on Olakulehin’s health status and suitability for the position, the succession process remains in limbo. The uncertainty underscores the significance of adhering to established protocols and ensuring the well-being of the future Olubadan as a paramount consideration in the selection process.
