Cooking Gas Prices Plummet 21.42% To N16,195.07 NBS Reports

The national average retail price of refilling a 12.5kg cylinder of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) has dropped by 21.42% on a month-on-month basis to N16,195.07 in August 2025 from N20,609.48 in July.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), this significant decline offers relief to households battling high living costs.

The price drop is evident across different cylinder sizes, with the average retail price for refilling a 5kg cylinder decreasing by 22.32% month-on-month to N6,404.02 in August from N8,243.79 in July. On a year-on-year basis, the 5kg refill price showed a slight dip of 0.40% from N6,430.02 in August 2024.

Regional analysis reveals varying prices across Nigeria. The North-West recorded the highest average retail price for refilling a 12.5kg cylinder at N16,358.15, followed by the South-East at N16,344.61, while the South-West had the lowest at N15,865.17. Yobe State topped the list with the highest average price for a 12.5kg refill at N16,887.42.

State-by-state breakdown shows Benue State recorded the lowest price at N15,102.50, followed by Borno and Imo with N15,176.39 and N15,177.58, respectively. For 5kg cylinders, Katsina State had the highest average price at N6,945.21, while Delta State offered the cheapest price at N5,657.50.

Despite this short-term relief, analysts warn that prices are still higher compared to last year, recording a 4.13% increase year-on-year from N15,552.56 in August 2024. The volatility of gas prices means the relief could be short-lived unless supply and distribution bottlenecks are addressed.

The latest drop in prices will likely bring relief to millions of Nigerian households that rely heavily on cooking gas. As the NBS reports, the price drop is a welcome development for many families who had to cut down usage or revert to firewood and charcoal due to soaring prices.
