The looming threat of a warning strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) has prompted urgent calls for reconsideration from the Coalition of Nigeria Civil Society Forum, headquartered in Abuja.
Dr. Godwin Abutu, the Convener of the coalition, implored the organized labor to prioritize national interests over industrial action.
During a press conference held in Abuja on Thursday, Dr. Abutu spoke about the urgent need for the NLC and TUC to engage constructively with the myriad challenges facing the nation. He lamented the perceived ineffectiveness of the labor unions in addressing critical issues during past negotiations with the government.
Dr. Abutu expressed concern over the worsening economic situation exacerbated by the mismanagement of palliatives meant for the masses. He criticized the state governors for their alleged embezzlement of relief materials, which has led to prolonged suffering among Nigerians.
Highlighting the urgency of the situation, Dr. Abutu referenced recent threats by groups such as the Fulani Nationality Movement and Miyetti Allah Koutal Hore, further underscoring the need for a collective approach to national issues.
“We urge them to join us as patriots in this country to holistically assess our situation from all angles and contribute our quota to the development of our dear country,” Dr. Abutu stated.
The coalition gave the NLC and TUC a 24-hour ultimatum to rescind their decision to proceed with the warning strike. Dr. Abutu urged the labor unions to embrace dialogue and collaboration with other stakeholders to address the pressing challenges facing Nigeria.
