Dangote Commends Ogun’s Investment Policies, Plans New Developments

Dangote Commends Ogun’s Investment Policies, Plans New Developments.

The President of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, has praised the Ogun State government’s investor-friendly policies, stating that they played a key role in his company’s decision to reinvest in the state.

Speaking during a courtesy visit to Governor Dapo Abiodun at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, Dangote described Ogun as one of Nigeria’s top investment destinations and a hub for manufacturing. He also revealed plans to revive the abandoned Olokola Free Trade Zone (OKFTZ) and construct the country’s largest port.

 Overcoming Past Challenges

Dangote expressed regret that the $580 million Itori cement factory, which was meant to be completed years ago, faced setbacks due to opposition from former Governor Ibikunle Amosun’s administration.

“Our factory at Itori was pulled down twice. When we started the second time, they did not only demolish the factory but also the fence, so we left. But right now, we are back. When you get to the factory, you will be surprised at what we have done,” he said.

He further revealed that two new production lines, with a combined capacity of six million metric tonnes per year, have been built at Itori. Additionally, a 12 million metric tonnes per year plant is being developed in Ibeshe, which will bring Ogun’s total cement production capacity to 18 million metric tonnes annually—the highest in Africa.

 Expanding Nigeria’s Industrial Capacity

Dangote highlighted the success of his company’s investments in cement and fertiliser production, which have made Nigeria self-sufficient in both sectors, with surplus products now being exported to earn foreign exchange.

He also confirmed that his 650,000 barrels-per-day refinery in Ibeju-Lekki is now supplying Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), aviation fuel, and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) to the domestic market.

 Ogun State’s Response

Governor Abiodun welcomed Dangote’s renewed commitment to the state, recalling that many Ogun residents were disheartened when the Dangote Refinery project was relocated to Lagos.

“I want to thank you for coming back to Ogun State and also for your belief and trust in your country, Nigeria. The number of people you have employed and the impact you continue to make not just in this state, but in Nigeria as a whole, is remarkable,” he said.

He also commended the Dangote Group for its Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives, including the ongoing construction of the Interchange-Papalanto-Ilaro Road.

Amosun Challenges Dangote’s Claims

In response to Dangote’s allegations of obstruction under his administration, former Governor Amosun’s media office issued a statement requesting proof of approval for the demolished structures.

“We appeal to Alhaji Dangote to provide the public with the requisite approvals for the construction of the structures he alleged were demolished. This will help put the issue in proper context,” said a statement from Amosun’s media representative, Lanre Akinwale.

He further stated that no company, including Dangote Group, was above the law, adding, “There could not be two governments in a state.”

Despite past challenges, Dangote’s renewed investment in Ogun State signals a new era of economic growth and industrial development for the region.
