Delap Inspires Ipswich To First Home Win As Chelsea’s Title Hopes Fade.
Ipswich Town secured their first home win of the season, defeating Chelsea 2-0 at Portman Road, thanks in large part to Liam Delap’s exceptional performance.
The 21-year-old striker, formerly of Manchester City, scored a 12th-minute penalty and then provided the assist for Omari Hutchinson’s second-half goal. Delap’s penalty was awarded after a VAR review deemed that Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen had made sufficient contact with the Ipswich player.
Chelsea dominated possession but struggled to capitalise on their chances, with the VAR intervening again to rule out a Joao Felix equaliser in the first half due to offside. Ipswich’s second goal came courtesy of Delap’s vision, as he capitalised on Axel Disasi’s poor back pass to set up Hutchinson for a straightforward finish.
The victory propels Ipswich above Leicester City into 18th place, just one point adrift of Wolves. Meanwhile, Chelsea’s consecutive defeats have dealt a significant blow to their title aspirations, leaving them 10 points behind league leaders Liverpool, who also possess a game in hand.
Chelsea’s manager, Enzo Maresca, will be concerned by his side’s wastefulness in front of goal, as their challenge for the Premier League title appears increasingly unlikely.
