Fenerbache’s season in the Turkish League continue to be disrupted by many on field drama as players walk away from cup final against Galatasaray.
Fenerbahce’s players made a dramatic statement by walking off the pitch just one minute into Sunday’s Turkish Super Cup match against Galatasaray, resulting in the game being abandoned and their forfeiture of the trophy.
Fenerbahce, fielding their Under-19 team, opted to withdraw from the rescheduled match in Sanliurfa, approximately 1,000 km from Istanbul, following Galatasaray’s goal by Argentine striker Mauro Icardi.
Reports indicated that Fenerbahce had sought a postponement of the match due to their upcoming Europa Conference League quarter-final against Olympiakos Piraeus on Thursday but were denied the request.
Earlier in March, Fenerbahce had contemplated pulling out of the Turkish Super Lig in response to an incident where their players were attacked by Trabzonspor fans during a match.
In a statement on Sunday, Fenerbahce reaffirmed their commitment to their millions of fans worldwide and their dedication to national values.
The Turkish Super Cup, initially slated to take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in December, was postponed. Media sources suggested that the match was canceled because Saudi authorities objected to players wearing T-shirts featuring Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of modern Turkey, during the warm-up before the evening kickoff.
