The Chief Judge of Edo State, Justice Daniel Okungbowa, has taken a decisive step in the ongoing investigation into the alleged constitutional infractions involving the Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Philip Shaibu.
Without disclosing reasons for his action, Justice Okungbowa has reconstituted the 7-man panel tasked with delving into the allegations brought forth by the State House of Assembly.
The announcement came through a statement issued by the Chief Registrar of the state High Court, Mr. Benson Osawaru, on Monday in Benin City. The reconstituted panel will still be led by Justice Steve Omonua, with several members retained from the initial lineup, including Prof. Theresa Akpoghome, Mr. Oghogho Oviasu, Surv. Dr. Andrew Oliha, Mr. Idris Abdulkareen, and newly appointed members, President Aigbokhian and Mariam Ilavbare.
Two members, Prof. Boniface Omomion and Prof. Violet Aigbokhaevo, have been removed from the earlier list. The changes were made following a resolution passed by the Edo State House of Assembly on March 19, 2024, which mandated the Chief Judge to review the composition of the panel.
The impeachment proceedings against Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu were initiated by the Majority Leader of the House, Hon Charity Aiguobarueghian, who cited perjury and disclosure of government secrets during a plenary session on March 6.
