The Emir of Kano, Aminu Bayero, strongly condemns the alarming rise in child kidnapping and trafficking, particularly involving northern minors being transported to southern regions of the country.

Speaking to journalists in Kano, the first-class traditional ruler, represented by Dan Malikin Kano, Ahmad Umar, asserts that the Emirate will no longer tolerate such heinous acts within the state.

Expressing deep concern, Emir Aminu Bayero emphasizes the urgency of proactive measures to curb this distressing trend. He declares, “We will no longer tolerate a situation where our children are kidnapped, sold, and subjected to changes in their tribe and religion. This illicit activity must cease, and we must take decisive action to bring it under control.”

The Kano State Police Command reported the dismantling of a human trafficking syndicate on December 27, 2023, with nine suspects arrested in Kano, Bauchi, Lagos, Delta, Anambra, and Imo States. The syndicate was involved in the abduction, purchase, and sale of minors, leading to the rescue of seven children, primarily from Bauchi state.

Emir Aminu Bayero expresses disappointment over the abduction of minors, urging swift punishment for the perpetrators as a deterrent. He highlights Kano’s historical hospitality towards visitors but emphasizes that this should not be exploited for criminal activities.

“Kano has been welcoming visitors for centuries, but recent incidents of child trafficking have deeply disappointed us. The Emir seeks a lasting solution to this problem,” he states.

Eze Ndigbo, Boniface Igbekwe, leader of the Igbo community in Kano, also condemns the act, dissociating the Igbo community from the suspects and advocating for the punishment of those responsible. The Igbo community expresses shock over the kidnapped children, emphasizing their commitment to peaceful coexistence.

The state chairman of the ACF, Faruk Umar, commends the political commitment shown by Governor Abba Yusuf and Police Commissioner Hussaini Gumel.

He calls for increased efforts from the police in dismantling criminal gangs involved in kidnapping. Umar urges the judiciary to ensure that perpetrators face the full force of the law and encourages legislators to enact robust legislation against kidnapping and abduction.
