Emir Sanusi Urges Peace Amid Emirate Dispute, Warns Against Unrest

Emir Sanusi Urges Peace Amid Emirate Dispute, Warns Against Unrest.

The Emir of Kano, Lamido Sanusi, has urged residents to remain law-abiding and avoid actions that could provoke unrest in the city, as tensions surrounding his reinstallation continue to rise.

In a voice statement in Hausa, shared by Premier Radio Kano on Facebook, the Emir cautioned those opposing his return to the throne, stating that their resistance was against the will of God and would not end well.

“We are calling on the people to be law-abiding citizens. This conflict is not about me; they are fighting what God has destined to happen. God does not need anyone’s support. I urge you all to remain patient and prayerful. God will continue to support those who are fair and just,” he said.

Sanusi also issued a stern warning against individuals attempting to incite violence in Kano, declaring that they would face divine retribution.

His remarks come in the wake of Governor Abba Yusuf’s recent directive for the state’s emirate councils to begin preparations for the Sallah Durbar festival, a move that has further heightened tensions.

Legal Expert Raises Alarm Over Court Ruling

Meanwhile, prominent human rights advocate and legal expert, Chidi Odinkalu, has voiced concerns over an impending ruling by the Court of Appeal, which he claims could significantly impact Kano State’s political and legal landscape.

Posting on his official X account (@ChidiOdinkalu), Odinkalu alleged that credible judicial sources had informed him of plans to issue an injunction next Tuesday. According to him, the ruling would allow the controversial Durbar festival to proceed while preventing Kano State authorities from intervening.

Odinkalu warned that such a decision could further destabilise the state, noting that it follows a contentious ruling last week by a panel of junior justices, which overturned an earlier judgment in favour of a key figure in the ongoing legal battle.

He also raised concerns over the impartiality of the judicial process, pointing out that one of the justices involved is married to a party in the case.

As the situation unfolds, Odinkalu has called for public vigilance, promising further updates on the matter.

With growing national attention on the emirate dispute, stakeholders continue to urge for peace and stability in Kano, fearing that any misstep could lead to wider unrest.
