#Endbadgovernace Protest: Nigeria Police Warn Against Treasonable Protests Involving Foreign Flags

The Nigeria Police Force has issued a stern warning against the display of foreign flags and calls for a military takeover during ongoing nationwide protests.

These actions have been described as treasonable felonies by the Force Public Relations Officer, Assistant Commissioner of Police Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in a statement released on Tuesday.

The police have expressed concern over the violent nature of the protests, particularly in Bauchi, Kano, Kaduna, and Katsina states, where demonstrators have been seen brandishing foreign flags. Investigations indicate that protest organisers in these states are involving innocent children in these activities. Over 90 suspects have been arrested, including tailors who made the flags and their sponsors.

Efforts are underway to apprehend additional sponsors behind the production of the flags and those inciting these treasonable acts. The statement emphasised that displaying foreign flags and calling for a military takeover are clear treasonable offences, revealing the protest organisers’ intentions to destabilise Nigeria’s democratic government.

While tensions from the protests have eased following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s address on August 4, 2024, some groups continue to engage in subversive activities, including violent and unlawful protests. These protests have led to the destruction of public infrastructure and private property, looting, and calls for a military takeover.

The statement affirmed that individuals and groups involved in such actions will be treated as subversive agents and face appropriate charges. Inspector General of Police Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun has directed Deputy Inspectors General of Police for the Northwest and Northeast zones, DIGs Bala Ciroma and Bello Makwashi, to lead operations in the affected states. Their task is to stabilise the situation and prevent further violence.

The Nigeria Police Force commended Nigerians who have refrained from participating in the protests and those who have spoken out against them, recognising their patriotism and belief in the government’s efforts to achieve economic recovery and growth. The police also acknowledged the patriotism of those who peacefully participated in the protests but withdrew when they turned violent, as well as those who heeded the president’s call for dialogue.
