Gordon’s Penalty Secures A Point For Newcastle Against Manchester City.
Anthony Gordon’s second-half penalty earned Newcastle United a valuable point in a 1-1 draw against Manchester City at St James’ Park, as the defending champions were held for the second time in a week.
City took the lead in the 35th minute when defender Josko Gvardiol smartly finished off a lay-off from Jack Grealish, capitalising on a period of dominance from the visitors. Despite the absence of key midfielder Rodri, who has been ruled out for the rest of the season due to a knee injury, City looked comfortable with Mateo Kovacic and Rico Lewis stepping up in midfield.
However, Newcastle came out stronger in the second half and were rewarded during their best spell of the game. Bruno Guimaraes played a precise through ball that found Anthony Gordon onside after City’s Kyle Walker failed to track him. The England forward went down under a challenge from City goalkeeper Ederson, who was subsequently booked. Gordon kept his composure and calmly converted the penalty, sending Ederson the wrong way.
City could have been further ahead before the break, but Ilkay Gundogan squandered a golden opportunity when he failed to chip the ball over Newcastle keeper Nick Pope after a poor clearance.
Both teams pushed for a winner in the final stages, with Newcastle substitute Sean Longstaff coming close for the hosts, while Bernardo Silva forced a good save from Pope deep into stoppage time.
Newcastle’s draw means they still have only one victory in their last 34 top-flight encounters with Manchester City. For Pep Guardiola’s side, it marks a second consecutive game without a win, having dropped four points in a week after their perfect start to the season.
