Europa Conference League: Aston Villa Have A Mountain To Climb; Following Their 4:2 Loss To Olympiakos In Semi-Final First Leg Contest

Aston Villa lost their first leg semi-final clash against Olympiakos by a whooping 4 goals to 2 at the Villa park stadium.

Aston Villa captain John McGinn reflected on a tumultuous Europa Conference League semi-final first-leg defeat against Olympiakos, acknowledging that “everything that could have gone wrong, did.”

Ayoub El Kaabi’s hat-trick for the visitors, including two early goals, set the tone for a challenging night for Villa.

Ollie Watkins managed to pull one back for Unai Emery’s side, and Moussa Diaby quickly equalized after the break, injecting hope into Villa’s camp.

However, Olympiakos regained the lead with an El Kaabi penalty and a fortunate deflected goal from Santiago Hezze.

Despite Douglas Luiz’s late penalty miss, Villa will now have to overturn a two-goal deficit in the second leg on 9 May to secure their first European final appearance since 1982.

“There were mistakes all round tonight, and we’ll take responsibility,” McGinn shared with TNT Sports, acknowledging the uphill battle ahead but remaining optimistic about their capabilities.

El Kaabi’s opening goal, initially disallowed for offside but overturned by VAR, set the stage for Olympiakos’ assertive performance. His second goal, a deft finish after a clever pass from Daniel Podence, further cemented Villa’s defensive struggles.

Watkins’ goal just before halftime offered a glimmer of hope, echoed by Diaby’s equalizer early in the second half.

However, Olympiakos capitalized on Villa’s defensive lapses, with El Kaabi converting a penalty and Hezze benefiting from a deflection off Ezri Konsa.

Despite Villa’s passionate support, including the presence of fan Prince William, the Prince of Wales, and an electrifying atmosphere, Olympiakos’ bold play and intensity caught them off guard.

Emery emphasized the need for improvement, acknowledging Olympiakos’ deserving win and the necessity for Villa to elevate their game significantly for the second leg.

In the other semi-final, Fiorentina clinched a dramatic 3-2 home victory over Club Bruges, with M’Bala Nzola scoring the decisive goal in added time after a resilient display from the 10-man Belgian side.
