Manchester United scraped into the FA Cup final on penalties despite throwing away a three-goal lead against Championship side Coventry in an epic semi-final at Wembley

Manchester United endured a nail-biting ordeal to secure their place in the FA Cup final, clinching a dramatic 4-2 penalty shootout victory over Coventry City after extra time at Wembley Stadium.

The match saw a heart-stopping moment in the 121st minute when Victor Torp’s goal was disallowed for offside.

Coventry’s manager, Mark Robins, known for his pivotal role in saving Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United tenure, understood the weight of this match on Erik ten Hag’s leadership.

Despite Coventry’s early containment of United, the Red Devils took the lead midway through the first half when Scott McTominay capitalized on Diogo Dalot’s cross, scoring his 10th goal of the season.

United strengthened their position just before halftime as Harry Maguire netted a powerful header from a Bruno Fernandes corner, giving them a commanding lead at the interval.

Fernandes added to United’s tally with a deflected strike shortly before the hour mark, showcasing his skillful playmaking abilities.

Coventry sparked hope among their supporters with goals from Ellis Simms and Callum O’Hare, narrowing the gap and forcing the match into extra time.

The intense pace continued in extra time, with both teams coming close to scoring. Torp’s apparent comeback-sealing goal was disallowed for offside, leading the match into a tense penalty shootout.

The climax arrived when Ben Sheaf missed his penalty for Coventry, allowing Rasmus Højlund to secure United’s victory with his spot-kick. United’s hard-fought win sets up a final showdown against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, promising another thrilling encounter at Wembley.

Despite their formidable second-half performance, United will face a formidable challenge to overturn last year’s 2-1 final defeat.
