The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has launched a rigorous campaign against the extortion and illicit activities of touts at Nigerian airports, as announced by FAAN Managing Director, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, during a press briefing on Saturday.
Addressing the press in her Lagos office, Kuku stated the persistent issue of touts harassing and extorting unsuspecting passengers at various airports across the country. She vowed to eradicate these illegal activities, reinforcing her commitment to providing a seamless and pleasant experience for travelers.
Kuku appointed Henry Agbebire, FAAN’s Director of Special Duties, to head a dedicated committee tasked with combating these criminal elements. This committee will work in conjunction with all government agencies operating at the airports to ensure full compliance with the newly implemented anti-touting and anti-extortion measures.
To expedite the legal process and enforce the zero-tolerance policy, magistrate courts will be established at international airports specifically for prosecuting offenders. “The task force has been mandated to enforce discipline among airport staff and maintain a culture of professionalism at all levels,” Kuku stated.
FAAN plans to set up dedicated phone lines and QR codes, allowing passengers to provide feedback on their airport experiences. This initiative, they say, aims to enhance accountability and transparency, as all airport personnel will be required to prominently display their on-duty cards and name tags for easy identification.
This announcement follows FAAN’s recent warning against bribery and extortion ahead of the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations, assuring travelers of a smooth journey. Obiageli Orah, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, reaffirmed FAAN’s commitment to upgrading security measures to ensure the safety of lives and property at the airports.
