FCT Minister Nyesom Wike Approves Recruitment Of 34 Resident Doctors To Boost Healthcare.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, has approved the recruitment of 34 resident doctors for a seven-year residency training programme aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery in the FCT.

Mr Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant to the minister on Public Communications and Social Media, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.

According to Olayinka, the 34 doctors represent the first batch of a total of 60 medical professionals approved for residency training across eight specialities in FCT Administration hospitals.

He detailed the distribution of the new recruits, stating that five doctors would be assigned to the psychiatric department, four to internal medicine, and one to general surgery. Additionally, one doctor will specialise in anaesthesiology, eight in family medicine, six in ophthalmology, and nine in obstetrics and gynaecology.

“This is the first time such an initiative is being implemented outside employees of the Health Management Board, thereby creating more opportunities for doctors and strengthening healthcare delivery in the FCT,” Olayinka said.

He further noted that the remaining 26 doctors would be recruited in due course by the FCTA Civil Service Commission. These will include one doctor for the psychiatric department, four for internal medicine, eight for general surgery, five for anaesthesiology, and eight for paediatrics.

The recruitment of resident doctors underscores the government’s commitment to improving medical services and ensuring the availability of skilled professionals in the FCT’s healthcare sector.
